Die casting processes require mold materials that exhibit high strength and thermal fatigue resistance. The optimization of tool steel properties is performed through the heat-treatment of hardening and tempering, which induces both microstructural changes and residual stresses. The service life of die-casting molds is greatly improved by this heat-treatment, although a quantitative description of its benefits in design phases still needs to be achieved.
Based on developed simulation results of the heat-treatment, a prediction tool for heat-checking failure of a die-casting mold will be developed. Different failure models will be implemented and compared in order to investigate the effects of different heat-treatment conditions with regards to thermal fatigue resistance.
• Knowledge in materials science and/or continuum mechanics
• Interest in numerical simulations and Finite Element Methods
• Ideally experience in Matlab or Python programming
