The optimization of the contact and fatigue properties of gears is achieved through the case-hardening heat-treatment. The high temperatures and microstructural changes in the material during this process cause changes in the gear’s geometry, which have to be corrected through subsequent grinding.
The candidate will adapt and extend the available in-house Finite Element model for case-hardening heat-treatment to the steel 20MnCr5 based on literature data. Through analysis of the relevant boundary conditions, thermodynamical calculations and analogies with other investigated steels, the candidate will build a material model for a Finite Element simulation of the grinding of gears.
– Knowledge in materials science and/or continuum mechanics
– Interest in numerical simulations and Finite Element Methods
– Ideally experience with Matlab or Python programming
